The City of Geneva, which has been committed to the ecological transition for several years, is now taking a new step forward with the adoption of a climate strategy comprising 30 objectives and 78 measures organized into nine strategic priorities. The city aims to become carbon-neutral while improving the quality of life for its residents.

The city’s climate strategy involves a profound shift in mindset. Indeed, drastically reducingCO2 emissions requires a fundamental rethinking of how we travel, consume, and work.

With its innovative approach, the climate strategy aims not only to reduce direct carbon emissions within the municipality, but also indirect emissions generated abroad through the production or consumption of products used in the municipality.

It is also ambitious in its implementation, as it highlights the urgent need for action on all fronts—environmental, social, and economic—with the goal of creating a carbon-neutral society, as well as a more inclusive, healthier, and more peaceful city.

Key steps toward achieving the essential transition

To achieve this goal, the Administrative Council drew on the Cantonal Climate Plan (PCC), adapting it to the municipality’s responsibilities, missions, and specific characteristics.

On this basis, it adopted 30 objectives and 78 measures, organized into nine strategic areas: consumption of goods and services; energy and buildings; mobility; land use planning; health and public safety; biodiversity and natural environments; public engagement; the financial center; and exemplary public administration.

The City of Geneva: A Pioneer and Role Model

To contribute to the global effort to achieve carbon neutrality, the municipal administration is committed to acting responsibly and setting an example by accelerating existing measures and developing new initiatives. To bring this ambitious societal project to fruition, the City of Geneva aims to lead the way and garner public support.

The need to take action

In February 2020, the City of Geneva declared a climate emergency and adopted two goals:

  • A 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (implementation of the Paris Agreement) and carbon neutrality by 2050. In April 2021, the City adopted a series of urgent measures to reduce its carbon footprint.
  • For the City of Geneva, the adoption of this climate strategy marks a new phase in its efforts to integrate climate goals into all of its public policies.
