At an inaugural meeting, Mr. Antonio Hodgers launched the work of the Climate Council, which was established by the State Council. The Climate Council is intended to be a think tank composed of key stakeholders from the Canton of Geneva representing diverse backgrounds. Its objective is to provide the State Council with insights, in connection with the Cantonal Climate Plan, on any topics for consideration and potential courses of action in this area. The Council will carry out its work during an initial one-year phase.
The Climate Council is an independent body established by the State of Geneva to provide advice and issue recommendations, particularly regarding the implementation of measures under the Cantonal Climate Plan. It is intended to serve as a think tank and a hub for creativity, as well as an advisory group for the Cantonal Climate Plan that complements existing advisory bodies. The Climate Council is composed of key stakeholders from the Canton of Geneva representing diverse backgrounds, each with their own unique perspectives and insights. This diversity will provide valuable insights, particularly to the State Council, on any issues under consideration and potential courses of action in this area. It is chaired by Ms. Sophie Swaton, a professor and researcher at the University of Lausanne, and all members are appointed in their individual capacities.
The State Council approved the creation of the Climate Council at its meeting on May 5, 2021. This Council is not intended to be a permanent body. An initial one-year term, which may be renewed, is scheduled to run from October 2021 to October 2022. The ZOEIN Foundation has been tasked with supporting the members in this project and ensuring the Council’s smooth operation.
