Established within the framework of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe and holding consultative status with the Council of Europe, FEDRE has been actively supporting local and regional authorities since its inception. It is involved in economic, fiscal, environmental, social, cultural, and institutional issues.

Awareness-raising and exchange initiatives promoting sustainable development have been carried out in Eastern European countries. The largest of these took place in the Omsk region of Siberia.

His work in the 1990s with Poland’s Ministry of Reforms marked a pivotal moment, in close collaboration with the Council of Europe, in the establishment of new provisions creating a framework that ensured its independence from Russia.

FEDREhas been deeply involved in the Balkans for many years and has contributed to the establishment and consolidation of networks of local and regional actors (both political and economic). It also strives to connect networks of local initiatives, such as the Agencies for Local Democracy (ADL) or the National Associations of Local and Regional Authorities of Southeast Europe (NALAs), with other existing networks. For a long time, FEDRE was the only non-Balkan organization serving as an elected member of a NALAS body.

Today, its main programs focus on the “border effect” between Switzerland and its neighboring countries, as well as certain other regions; the creation of cross-border technology hubs; and monitoring energy issues, while supporting diverse energy production and the development of technologies to ensure their compatibility with sustainable development.
