This year, 2022, the celebration of World Wetlands Day holds special significance. On August 30, 2021, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 75/317 designating February 2 as “World Wetlands Day”
Nearly 90% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded since the 1700s, and wetlands are now disappearing three times faster than forests. Yet wetlands are critically important ecosystems that contribute to biodiversity, climate change mitigation and adaptation, freshwater supply, global economies, and much more.
There is an urgent need to raise national and international public awareness about wetlands in order to halt their rapid disappearance and encourage conservation and restoration efforts.
World Wetlands Day is the perfect opportunity to raise awareness about these critically important ecosystems.
